Interview with the architect Paula Santos

On January 16, 2020, we interviewed the architect Paula Santos. During an interesting conversation, he told us how he came to architecture, went over his professional career and talked about the challenges for the future of the profession in Portugal. In another format, the dialogue was extended and continued at the Roca Lisboa Gallery as part of the "Espaço para arquitetas" (Space/Place for Architects) conversation cycle. The 9th session was dedicated to the presentation of architectural projects carried out in the "paula santos | arquitectura" atelier and moderated by Patrícia Santos Pedrosa (MA).

We thank Roca Lisboa Gallery for providing the space for the interview. And we thank architect Paula for her generosity and availability. We hope to meet soon!

Interview with the architect and researcher Luz Valente-Pereira

On December 20, 2019, under a rain and wind storm, we were received by the architect and researcher Luz Valente-Pereira at her home. It was a joy for us to end the year getting to know her and being able to interview her. Despite little known and the lack of recognition, Luz Valente-Pereira built a solid career as a researcher in the LNEC, from the 1960s to the end of the 20th century, presenting a vast publication of works that reflect critically from the scale of the house to the scale of the city and regional planning.

We thank architect Luz for her generosity and availability to welcome us to her home. Also to your husband for his support for the rigorous dates throughout the interview. It was a pleasure to meet her and we hope to see them soon!

Interview with the architect Ana Jara

On November 29, we doubled the field trips and took advantage of the day to hear two Portuguese architects, from different generations and with different professional backgrounds. After the morning dedicated to the architect Inês Lobo, we interviewed the architect Ana Jara in Lisbon, within the scope of the research project W@ARCH.PT and the participation of the team in the elaboration of contents of a future global encyclopedia about women in architecture (BGEWIA, 2021). Co-founder of the atelier Artéria, with the architect Lucinda Fonseca, she explained to us the context of appearance and development of the collective office, which crosses architecture, politics and participation.

We thank architect Ana for her generosity and availability. We hope to meet soon!

We went to consult archives in Porto!

We thank those who received us so well: in the OA, Dra. Lígia Filipe Sampaio (librarian and archivist) and the architect Cláudia Santos (direction of OASRN); in FBAUP, Dra. Isabel Barroso; and, in FAUP, Dra. Teresa Godinho. We returned to Lisbon with new data, new questions and a lot of desire to continue!

Digital Storytelling at Olhares do Mediterrâneo

Within the 6th edition of the film festival "Olhares do Mediterraneo", we participated in the Masterclass "Digital Storytelling" with Francesca Trianni, video journalist for TIME magazine and director. Taking the opportunity to learn and reflect on the documentary that will be output from the W@ARCH.PT project, we followed the construction of the film Paradise Without People on the lives of two Syrian refugees.

Interview with the architect Helena Roseta

Women are generally absent from the official sources and texts of History. Oral history has been an essential component of collecting and making Women's History. Interviews are a privileged method of the W@ARCH.PT research project because they allow women to speak with their own voice. And we want to listen!

On 23 October 2019 we interviewed Portuguese architect and politician Helena Roseta. She received us kindly in her office of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly during the last days when she served as President of this municipal institution. As part of the research project W@ARCH.PT and BGEWIA, we talked about the academic path, the references and the long and varied professional carreer.

We thank architect Helena for her generosity and availability. We hope to meet soon!
