Publication on women in architecture in Portugal and Spain in the 1970s-1980s

The research project embraced a new challenge. With co-organization of Patrícia Santos Pedrosa (W@ARCH.PT, Lisbon) and Lucía C. Pérez Moreno (MuWo, Zaragoza), a special issue of the Swiss scientific journal Arts was structured, called "Becoming a Gender Equity Democracy: Women and Architecture Practice in Spain and Portugal (1960s–1980s)". Also in this issue and in co-authorship, the researchers published the article "Women Architects on the Road to an Egalitarian Profession—The Portuguese and Spanish Cases": a comparative study on Portugal and Spain, with data on the context of women architects in both countries.

Release of the official website of the W@ARCH.PT project

Designing, thinking and creating the website of the W@ARCH.PT project was a very interesting and motivating job! On March 18, 2020, the opening was celebrated with a party at a distance and in an online format, bringing together part of the research team and friends of the project. It was a beautiful moment!

We thank the presence of those who accompanied us, the incredible work of the designer Margarida Ornelas and the support of the consultant José Nuno Pereira!

Editing Wikipedia pages with Wiki Editoras Lx | session 1

Early in physical confinement due to the covid-19 pandemic, we joined the group of women Wiki Editoras Lx. Continuing the bi-monthly meetings, now in online format, we started creating and editing Wikipedia pages with biographies of women and non-binary people - residuals in this global encyclopedia. Because who is not mentioned, does not exist!

Thank you for welcoming us so well!

Covid-19 pandemic confinement

The covid-19 pandemic has forced us to be physically confined within the confines of our homes since March 14, 2020, as it happened around the world in stages. We had to reinvent ourselves and adapt to telework, leaving home only to do essential purchases. we still do not know what the consequences will be for the development of the project, which is in the field work phase.

Let's take care of each other!

Return to the National Library archive and collection

We returned to consulting the archives and bibliographic collection of the National Library of Portugal. We finished viewing the micro-films and flipped through so many documents and books that gave us new clues and confirmed many others!

National Library micro-films

We went to consult the old archives of National Librabry of Portugal, behind a trail launched by the research project consultant W@ARCH.PT, the architect and researcher João Paulo Martins. We couldn't touch the books, which are well kept, and we went to the dark room of the micro-films. We were amazed by the immense surprises and incredible women over the centuries! We will release the new data in a timely manner.

Interview with the architect Marta Oliveira

On March 4, 2020, we interviewed architect and teacher Marta Oliveira. In her FAUP office, we talked about the decision to study architecture, her contribution to the SAAL process (1974-1976) in Porto and the professional career - project practice and teaching at FAUP.

We thank architect Marta for her generosity and availability. We hope to meet soon!

Talks, meetings and clues in FAUP

We took advantage of the trip to Porto to reconcile several stages of fieldwork: after consulting archives, we talked to the professor Domingos Tavares about women he met, from women classmates, students and  professors. We were also happy to meet the professor Teresa Fonseca, who encouraged us a lot. FAn interview was promised soon!

We thank you both for availability!

Library: new collections available for consultation

The library dedicated to studies on women and feminist studies in architecture continues to grow. New books and collections have arrived, written in different languages and from different parts of the globe.

We thank those who received us so well: in FBAUP, Dra. Isabel Barroso; in FAUP, Dra. Teresa Godinho, and in FMS, the President Dra. Fátima Vieira, and their teams.
